Frequently Asked Questions
Why is StemX better than normal chisels or osteotomes?
Unlike other systems, StemX is not just a better set of cutting tools, nor is it a repurposed cement removal system.
StemX has been designed from conception to systematically break the implant-bone interface, removing 1-2mm of circumferential bone without the need for an extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO). We achieve this by targeting the distal tip of the implant first in the A/P and Lateral planes, and then delivering the cutting tools along the outer profile of the implanted hip only.
Do the cutting tools bend?
Even though the cutting tools are only 1mm thick, we have incorporated progressively long braces that slide over the cutting tools to add reinforcement. Unlike other flexible osteotome systems, strength and durability have been designed as a priority into the StemX system.
Does StemX remove collared stems?
Yes. The StemX system includes in it’s range the WLI system (wire loop instrument) which hugs the implant as it cuts proximal-to-distal on any well fixed uncemented implant.
The delivery of the cutting tools also allow all four sides of the hip prosthesis to be cleared regardless of whether the implant is collared or not.
Is the system powered?
No. All cutting tools are delivered manually using bespoke targeting devices to ensure all cuts are delivered at the implant-bone interface.
Why not use flexible osteotomes/ chisels?
Flexible cutting tools are usually the first port of call for the removal of an uncemented hip. Whilst they do cut the bone reasonably well, they also remove bone that need not be removed.
StemX aims to deliver dedicated osteotomes and chisels down the implant-bone interface and thus leaving a cavity in the femur small enough to accommodate a primary hip. The targeting of the distal tip in the A/P and lateral planes is the key to this delivery.
How much time does it save?
On average, the surgeon can remove a well fixed uncemented hip stem within 20 minutes of starting the extraction.
Is the training extensive?
No surgeon has required more than one or two sessions with a rep for the instruments to become second nature. They’re very intuitive and designed to be easily assembled and cleaned.
